The most common reason for a fire pump rebuild is excessive leaking.
Most fire pumps are packing-type pumps (as opposed to mechanical
seal). They are supposed to drip a bit, but as the packing becomes
compressed over time, the water leaks more and faster.
We generally can pull the top cover off and remove the rotating
assembly. We bring this to our shop where we evaluate the overall
condition and usually just change the shaft sleeves (if needed) and ball
bearings.
We then replace the rotor in the pump casing, reassemble the pump,
and adjust the new packing.
This can be done in a day's time because we will have ordered
any needed repair parts before starting the job.
The local fire department has to be notified that the system will be
down for the day. Depending on the complexity of the system, the
system servicing company may also have to be there for offline &
online setup.
